The Two Fatalities Revealed in the Ivy League School Incident as Authorities Persist in Hunt for Killer.

Two students who died in the recent violent attack in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter persisted following the discharge by local law enforcement of the sole person of interest in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also shared condolences on social media, remarking: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-old male taken into custody in a raid at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our public”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the building on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.

Officers that raided the lodging seized two firearms and magazines when the individual was detained, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, one student was discharged from care, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, loved ones, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his promising future.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
