As Sunbathers Ran From Attack, Viral Image Depicts Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic beach as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many local residents, heard cracking sounds echoing around the community.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, speaking to a pair who had run up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running towards something that surely every part of you would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, officers and paramedics treating dozens of those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the beach facility next to the location of the violence transforming into a temporary treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, including rushing into the surf to save people who were struggling.

In the days after the events, statements of gratitude were shared. A social media message conveyed gratitude for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over hatred”.

The group of beach patrol issued a statement, noting they were “processing what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the organization stated. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it aids those impacted.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional lifeguards, said that the crew performed exceptionally from the instant the incident began through to late that night.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” said a local official.

“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in keeping our iconic coastlines protected for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much good we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
