For decades, successive administrations has strived to rid the US of its reputation as a coercive, hegemonic nation. However with his blustering, often brutish actions toward global partners, the current president has swiftly reawakened that notion. During his tenure, the negative U.S. stereotype is returned.

He achieved this by using U.S. authority in forceful and presumptuous ways – by condemning other countries’ policies and then threatening to punish them if they don’t bow to his expectations. Roots of the "Ugly American"

The expression “the Ugly American” was brought to prominence by a literary work published in 1958 with that title; it portrayed the tactlessness and ineptness of American envoys who often didn’t speak the language where they were assigned and rarely engaged with the locals there. As decades passed, this phrase was more commonly applied to portray unaware and arrogant U.S. visitors and insensitive and arrogant U.S. strategies toward international partners.

He said the United States would terminate assistance to the nation after its leader, the Colombian president, complained that the American forces had targeted a local fishing craft and resulted in a casualty as part of Trump’s campaign of targeting vessels suspected of carrying narcotics. Utilizing ugly, tactless rhetoric, he labeled the nation's leader an “narcotics chief”.
